Fact 1: Factual reportage is shipping too much culture at the moment - too much because it's warping from the effort. If fiction can regain a healthy supply, news production will have to operate more within its natural domain of expertise.

Douglas Adams was right: the internet is a tool in its own right and is wasted when it's reverse-engineered into a fancy version of a previous technology, i.e. it's no use just putting novels on it.


Fact 2: Fiction reading has reached unhealthily low levels due to (a) social media's up-to-the-minute mix of self-documentary, commentary and news curation and (b) a nervous mainstream's relentless, competitive sensationalism, i.e. it has started to lag behind in a suddenly very present-tense environment.
